‘Obesity can cause infertility, non-communicable diseases, others’

Many women are grappling with infertility. But unknown to them that their problem may be as a result of the extra fats they have in their abdomen, which is known medically as ‘abdominal obesity’. WALE ADEPOJU writes on the travails of some women suffering from this problem. When Folu Adejare got married four years ago she was so happy and her joy knew no bound as she envisioned a glorious future with her husband. But, many years of childlessness and unending hospital visits has made her life a living hell. Infertility is a peculiar problem many people are grappling with, especially women in Nigeria. Why? This is because child bearing is sacred and, as such represents ‘fruitfulness’. Every culture in the country is emphatic about women having children for their husbands. This, however, makes many women become desperate in their pursuit to have their own children, so that they can be seen as complete women. Therefore, bringing a child into the world is seen as a demonstration of one’s fertility.
